One positive thing about a bad economy is it forces people who are currently unhappy with their present career to get out and make some changes. Here are a few short tips you can use when looking for a job from a career change point of view.

1. Expect to put in a great amount of time. You will quickly realize that the competition is fierce out there. Changing careers puts you in competition with people who might presently have experience on the resume.

This doesn’t mean however that a career change is not possible even in a bad economy. As a matter of fact many companies are looking for fresh faces and fresh ideas.

Your ability to seek these companies out and let them know about you often will come down to treating every day as though it is a full time job.

2. Focus on what you like about your current career. Many people are looking for a career change because they’re unhappy with their employer.

However there may be things you like about your current career that you could take with you to your new one. Make a list of those and use them as a starting point when finding places to work in your new career.

3. Take your skills with you. Depending on how long you have worked at your present job chances are this career has helped you develop many useful skills. Often these skills can be used interchangeably from one career to the next.

4. Network with people you know. Use your current list of contacts to introduce yoursel to potential new employers in the career you want to target.
